Sexual Assault Involving Clergy is Still a Problem

In 2018, abuse survivors exposed the Roman Catholic Church that led to its public fallout of scandals involving sexual abuse occurring in every state, including Indiana. That year, the Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese published a list containing the names of eighteen priests who had been credibly accused of sexually molesting underage children.

At the time that the list was released, eight of the predatory priests had died, two were incarcerated, and Church officials had dismissed the other eight. That same year, the Gary Diocese released a list containing the names of ten former religious leaders found guilty by Church officials of sexually assaulting underage minors.

The church’s internal investigation identified almost thirty clergy members accused of sexual misconduct across Indiana, including Reverend John Maung, who faced accusations he sexually assaulted an underage minor decades ago.
