Clergy Sexual Assault – An Ongoing Problem
In 2020, Church officials relocated Reverend Theodore McCarrick, a former Roman Catholic Cardinal, from his previous residency at a Kansas friary where he had lived since 2018. Reports indicate that McCarrick was involved in two out-of-court settlements that were negotiated in 2005 and 2007. The cases concerned allegations that the priest sexually assaulted seminarians in New Jersey before relocating to the Archdiocese of Washington in 2001.
A Kansas Catholic Conference Executive Director stated, “what former Cardinal McCarrick did was despicable. I think every Catholic, parent, priests, and the pew are hurt.”
However, law enforcement never charged the former Cardinal with any criminal offense. The Director was concerned that the former priest’s relocation from the friary might dampen the victims’ chances of receiving justice.
