New Hampshire Attorneys Investigating Sexual Assault Claims Against Roman Catholic Church Diocese
For at least seven decades, the Roman Catholic Church has relocated “problem priests” accused of sexual assault to other parishes throughout the United States to ensure they do not face criminal charges and civil accountability. Only recently have victims come forward to re-state their abuse allegations to ensure that the predatory religious leaders are held responsible for their unimaginable molesting behavior.
When church officials allow the sexual assaulter to remain in a power of position, they often continued to sexually abuse the victim or seek out others to engage in misappropriate behavior.
Not every sexual abuse survivor can speak out about the horrific assault they experienced until months or years later, if ever. Are you a sexual assault survivor and want justice? The compassionate network of affiliate attorneys at Rosenfeld Injury Lawyers, LLC, can help.
Our caring team of legal experts will fight to protect your rights and provide a safe place to speak openly about what occurred. Clergy Sexual Assault Remains a Problem
In August 2019, the Manchester Diocese released a list of priests’ names who had been credibly accused of sexually assaulting children in the state. The church database contained the names of seventy-three religious leaders, including Father Morley.
In 2011, the church received information involving incidents of sexual assault that took place over four decades ago. Morley has since been defrocked (laicized) for reasons other than sexually assaulting underage children.
The Devastating Effects of Sexual Assault
Sexual assault victims often face lifelong trauma in dealing with what happened days, months, or years ago. Molested adults and children can develop debilitating sleeping disorders, self-injury, ongoing depression, substance abuse, and suicide, including suicidal ideation (thinking about suicide).
Young children and teenage victims might develop negative eating habits, begin living an over-sexualized lifestyle, or engage in any form of risky behavior.
Holding the Abuser Accountable
In 2003, the Manchester Diocese agreed to a $6.5 million out of court settlement to resolve most of their sexual molestation cases filed against religious leaders and the Roman Catholic Church in New Hampshire. The settlement resolved cases involving over sixty men and women who had alleged sexual assault involving priests and other employees.
A plaintiff’s attorney stated that the diocese did not choose to settle out of court to support the victims who had been harmed. Instead, the church resolved the cases because the courts had ruled against them in several hearings. The monetary settlement agreement paid out approximately $100,000 for each victim.
